One of the biggest questions I often receive is about aviation safety in China.

On the eVTOL aircraft side, it is still early days. However, there is a growing body of research emerging on fault analysis and hazard assessments, particularly within the framework of industry standards like ARP 4754A and ARP 4761.

This research stems from academia, industry, and collaborations between them.

Publicly available information — including that not restricted behind university databases— ranges from general overviews to deeper studies, while also providing insights into the teams behind them.

For instance, Boundary AI’s founding team previously participated in eVTOL safety assessments as R&D personnel for European eVTOL manufacturers, “contributing modestly” to guidelines such as EASA’s SC-VTOL. “Many former colleagues” were involved in developing EUROCAE’s ED-300 guidelines, the company said.

While China holds a wealth of information—regulations, standards, special conditions, and other critical details—are all in Mandarin, with no English translations available.

The same is true for academic research.

This makes translation particularly challenging and often requires multiple rounds of rechecking.

As China continues to expand its growing body of fault and hazard research, I aim to provide a snapshot of what’s happening across both academia and industry.

For the research report below, I’ve done my best to ensure its accuracy, but please keep in mind that mistakes can occur. I’ve also formatted the paragraphs for readability.

Let’s get into it.
